Dr Katie Martin, the Executive Director of the Foodshare Institute for Hunger Research & Solutions, has dedicated her career to eradicating food insecurity in America.

In her book, Reinventing Food Banks and Pantries: New Tools to End Hunger, Dr Martin calls for empathy and political will to be focused on supporting the individual needs of people using food banks. The book is a how to for anyone volunteering at a food bank, with suggestions on ways to allow individuals to make their own food choices with dignity, as well as pointers on the training and activism that can contribute to a more systemic change in food systems.

The author, who was my guest earlier this year on Inside Ideas, has dedicated her career to researching food insecurity, talking with those experiencing it, visiting food banks and food pantries, and creating programs designed to provide more long-term solutions to hunger. The book distills the key learnings from this journey.

Jeff DeGraff was one of my earliest guests on Inside Ideas. He is both an advisor to Fortune 500 companies and a professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. His simultaneously creative and pragmatic approach to making innovation happen has led clients and colleagues to dub him the Dean of Innovation.

In his book, The Creative Mindset, DeGraff presents six creative skills and mindsets that can fuel innovation.

“Everyone is creative,” he told me. “We are just creative in different ways and in a wide variety of situations. Believing you are creative is the first step to mastering a creative mindset. Once you do that, you can make innovation happen anywhere and anytime.”

Wherever you are on your creative journey, DeGraff’s ideas will help you embrace new ways of thinking about where you can go next.
