The Inside Ideas podcast team is heading to Scotland for COP26. We will be filming special shows at the event, and speaking to the decision makers and changemakers involved in what has been labelled the last chance for world leaders to avoid run away climate change.

As this week’s UN Environment Programme’s Emissions Gap Report 2021 showed, the pledges made by governments so far fall well short of putting the world on track to meet the 1.5°C Paris goal, with temperature rises of at least 2.7°C expected this century. A scenario a recent IPCC report said will result in heat extremes that ‘more often reach critical tolerance thresholds for agriculture and health’.

“Climate change is no longer a future problem. It is a now problem,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. “To stand a chance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, we have eight years to almost halve greenhouse gas emissions: eight years to make the plans, put in place the policies, implement them and ultimately deliver the cuts. The clock is ticking loudly.”

Ahead of COP26 John Kerry, the 68th U.S. Secretary of State, and the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, said ‘Glasgow is the place, 2021 is the time‘ for nations to step up and make commitments that can keep that 1.5°C Paris goal in sight.
